Jennifer Lunden I am one of many Americans with chemical sensitivities. For me, this means that being exposed to perfume, air freshener, fresh paint, new carpet, pesticides, and chemically based cleaning products gives me headaches and other neurological symptoms. People with multiple chemical sensitivities have a hard road — some wind up homeless. According to a study published by the Environmental Health Group, as many as 50% of people with multiple chemical sensitivities wind up homeless at some point in their lives. Thankfully, this has not happened to me. But it happened to a friend of mine, and the stress of having no place safe to go caused her to attempt suicide. We are the walking wounded, but many more are affected in more subtle ways. Our country needs new policies to protect its citizens from chemicals.
